This year’s UoN HIV/AIDS Collaborative meeting was held in the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha from the 26th – 28th of January 2022. The department was represented by the Chairman, Dr Marianne Mureithi, Director Research UNITID- Prof Julius Oyugi, Dr Kariuki Njaanake and Ms Winnie Mutai.

What began as a small project in sexually transmitted infections in 1980 grew within a few years to become a multi-institutional collaboration between the University of Nairobi and institutions in Canada, the USA, Asia and elsewhere in Africa.  The work of the UoN and international scientists has contributed immensely to our knowledge about HIV/AIDS, STIs, child and reproductive health (among others). This partnership contributed to the creation of new institutions within the University of Nairobi such as the Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative (KAVI) and, University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Disease (UNITID).

Currently, the collaboration includes several other universities, including the University of Manitoba, University of Washington, the University of Ghent, the University of Toronto, Northwestern University, USA, McMaster University, Imperial College London, Oxford University, the University of California amongst others.

The meeting highlighted the contributions of various research groups current programs and research plans and reaffirmed the universities’ joint commitments to continued collaboration.
