BMC Medicine Launch Special Issue on RSV

The BioMed Central, an open access journal and part of Springer Nature, released a special issue on Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) on the 15th of May which included two papers with data from Kenya. The studies, Estimating the cost-effectiveness of maternal vaccination and monoclonal antibodies for respiratory syncytial virus in Kenya and South Africa and Estimates of the national burden of respiratory syncytial virus in Kenyan children aged under 5 years, 2010–2018 highlight the importance of studying RSV due to its substantial disease burden, especially in children.

One of the studies suggests that the prioritization of development and use of maternal vaccines and affordable long-lasting monoclonal antibodies could help reduce the disease burden. The Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology is proud to have its Doctoral Alumni & KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Officer Dr. Joyce Nyiro as part of the aforementioned studies.
