Overview

Philosophy

Enhancement of knowledge, skills and abilities obtained at the master’s level.

Rationale

The PhD in Infectious Diseases program gears towards independence in scientific and critical thinking with an emphasis on quality research and life-long learning to bring the student to a higher level of competence in Infectious Diseases with special expertise in an area chosen for the thesis.

Objective

The main aim of the programme is to produce high-quality graduates with significant communication, leadership, intellectual skills backed by ethics and social responsibility. This emphasizes on the aspect of integrating knowledge and skills acquired from medical/biological sciences and related technologies.

The PhD in Infectious Diseases programme in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology is by thesis with quarterly submission of progress reports. The minimum duration of the program is three (3) years.

Mode of Delivery

Proposal, progress report and thesis defense is done virtually during the COVID 19 pandemic.

During the study period, candidate participate in seminars, journal clubs and study fellowships.

PhD students, under the supervision of an academic staff and or an expertise as a supervisor, carry out a research thesis project on a selected topic in Infectious Diseases. Research proposals shall be presented to the Departmental Postgraduate Committee, Postgraduate School of Medicine Committee and appropriate ethics committees as may be required by the Faculty.

A holder of a Bachelor's and Master's degree from University of Nairobi or an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate

The applicant must be able to produce evidence, to the satisfaction of Senate, of his adequate background in the discipline and capacity to carry out original research.

In addition to producing evidence of eligibility for registration, candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Infectious Diseases may be required to appear for interview by the Faculty/School/Department concerned to determine their suitability for registration.

On application a candidate shall in the first instance submit the application form and a draft proposal of approximately 15 pages for consideration by the Faculty/School/Board concerned.

The draft proposal shall include a brief statement of the problem, research objectives, research questions, literature review, methodology, conceptual framework, a work plan and a budget.

Award of Degree

A Candidate who passes in both the coursework and dissertation examinations shall be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Infectious Diseases
