The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Nairobi was honoured to receive Prof. Pier Paolo Piccaluga for a courtesy call on the 5th of May 2025. Prof. Piccaluga met with the Chair of the Department, Dr. Marianne Mureithi, and Dr. Noel Onyango, a Department Lecturer and the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Research Lead at the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research.

Showcasing Groundbreaking HIV/AIDS Research

The AIDS2024 conference, held from July 22 to 26 in Munich, has been a significant event for researchers and professionals in the field of HIV/AIDS. This year's conference saw active participation from the KAVI-ICR team and the Department of Medical Microbiology, who presented their groundbreaking research and contributed to various sessions, showcasing their commitment to advancing HIV/AIDS research.

James Kangethe, a fellow of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Nairobi in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, showcased his research at the 2024 International Conference on HIV Treatment, Pathogenesis, and Prevention Research in Resource-Limited Settings (INTEREST). INTEREST 2024 was held in Cotonou, Benin from 14th May to 17th May 2024.

The Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) were delighted to host Prof. Pier Paolo Piccaluga during his latest visit to the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Nairobi.

Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology PhD student in Clinical Research and Ophthalmologist Dr. Oscar Onyango has been selected to be the Principal Investigator (PI) in the Elevatum Study sponsored by Genentech, a member of the Roche Group.

The Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology were delighted to welcome Carey Farquhar, MD, MPH from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.

KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) was awarded the 2022 International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) External Quality Assessment (EQA) Awards For Tier 1 and Tier 2. This is the second year running that the Institute has won this prestigious award. It recognises the best performing laboratories amongst their Clinical Research Centres in Africa. The Institute at the University of Nairobi, KNH Campus was first among Tier 1 and the Kangemi site among Tier 2.
