Female Genital Schistosomiasis and HIV Infection Field Work

Dr. Kariuki Njaanake, lead a team of researchers in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology in sample and specimen collection in Kilifi County for the ongoing research on “Female Genital Schistosomiasis and HIV infection. Hellen Kariuki and Felistas Muthini, Doctoral researchers and faculty members joined in this exercise.

ADVANCE ANNUAL PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS' MEETING

Over three days September 14th-16th, 2022, ADVANCE partners, USAID, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, and program Principal Investigators shared relevant presentations and participated in rich discussions reviewing program progress, challenges, and opportunities to maximize success for HIV biomedical prevention technologies and capacity strengthening across the all the partners' network in Kigali, Rwanda.

The 24th International AIDS Conference

Members of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology will be attending the 24th International AIDS Conference from the 29th of July - 2nd of August 2022 in Montreal, Canada.

The Conference will define future research agendas, shift latest evidence to action, and chart a new consensus on overcoming the HIV epidemic as a threat to public health and individual well-being.

Prof. Jaoko honoured for role in fight against HIV/AIDS

Member of the Department & Director KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research Prof. Walter Jaoko was one of the ten individuals who were honoured at the Ten out of Ten (10/10) Awards held at the House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster, London on 9th September, 2019.

The Ten out of Ten Awards aims at facilitating an important conversation about the intersection that must converge in order to meet the UN targets of globally ending all new HIV diagnosis by 2030.

Department Member Awarded Outstanding Achiever Award during UoN@50 Awards

Member of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Director of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research Prof. Walter Jaoko won the Outstanding Achiever Award at the UoN@50 Awards.

Prof. Jaoko was recognised for his role in the establishment of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research and his pioneering work in HIV/AIDS clinical research and vaccine initiatives

Dr. Mureithi: Challenges in research do not mean failure

While there have been some disappointments, Dr. Marianne Mureithi of KAVI-UoN told Healthy Nation that challenges in research do not mean failure.

“The HIV trials have not failed, rather, we have learnt a lot from previous trials that have greatly informed us on improving the vaccines and bringing us closer to an efficacious HIV vaccine,” she said.
