The African Advanced Vaccinology Course (Afro-ADVAC)

James Kang'ethe, a PhD scholar in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Nairobi, recently attended the African Advanced Vaccinology Course (Afro-ADVAC) held in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, South Africa. James, a CARTA cohort 10 fellow, participated in the course between April 17 - 26, 2023.

African Caribbean Cancer Consortium Wins Award at the AACR Annual Meeting

The African Caribbean Cancer Consortium (AC3) won the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Team Science Award at the AACR Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

As stated by the AACR, "This award recognizes an outstanding interdisciplinary research team for its innovative and meritorious science that has advanced or likely will advance our fundamental knowledge of cancer, or a team that has applied existing knowledge to advance the detection, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of cancer."

Washington State University President visit the University of Nairobi

Washington State University (WSU) is making strides in the field of education by expanding its global outreach. WSU President Prof. Kirk Schulz recently led a top delegation to the University of Nairobi (UoN) in Kenya. The visit aimed to discuss a joint PhD program between the two universities, a first in the region.

Surveillance of Potentially Zoonotic Viruses

Thanks to the University of Helsinki Taita Station, Dr. Joseph Ogola PhD, researcher in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology  together with Dr. Kristian Forbesa Visiting Faculty member recently had a good field trip in Kenya to sample bats, mosquitoes, and ticks for surveillance of potentially zoonotic viruses.

AFrIBOP 2022 Course

PhD Scholar Matrona Akiso recently attended the (AfrIBOP) Course in Malawi. This was a one week course on African Immunology of Parasites, Pathogens, and Pathogenesis (AfrIBOP) followed by another week of flow cytometry/bioinformatics training. The immunology course entailed talks and immunology lectures from well-known researchers from University of Glasgow, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme, KEMRI Wellcome Trust and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Visit by Professor Carey Farquhar

Carey Farquhar, a Professor in the Departments of Global Health, Medicine, and Epidemiology and Vice Dean for Education in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, paid a visit to the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology. She actively conducts research in Kenya on HIV testing and partner notification services, HIV and HCV diagnosis and access to treatment among people who inject drugs, and non-communicable diseases among HIV-positive individuals.
