Recently, Walter Jaoko, a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and the KAVI-ICR Director of Research, participated in the KBC Breakfast Show to discuss the emergence of new vectors in the fight against malaria. The Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) is one of the largest and most prestigious scientific conferences in infectious diseases, and the 2023 edition was no exception. Held from February 19th in Seattle, USA, the conference featured presentations and discussions on the latest research findings, clinical trials, and public health strategies related to HIV, hepatitis, COVID-19, and other viral infections.

Washington State University President visit the University of Nairobi

Washington State University (WSU) is making strides in the field of education by expanding its global outreach. WSU President Prof. Kirk Schulz recently led a top delegation to the University of Nairobi (UoN) in Kenya. The visit aimed to discuss a joint PhD program between the two universities, a first in the region.

Surveillance of Potentially Zoonotic Viruses

Thanks to the University of Helsinki Taita Station, Dr. Joseph Ogola PhD, researcher in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology  together with Dr. Kristian Forbesa Visiting Faculty member recently had a good field trip in Kenya to sample bats, mosquitoes, and ticks for surveillance of potentially zoonotic viruses.

Department Student Wins the Norman L Letvin Award

Delories Sikuku, an MSc student in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, recently received the prestigious Norman L Letvin award for her outstanding research in the field of AIDS vaccine discovery. The award was presented to her at the Collaborative AIDS Vaccine Discovery (CAVD) meeting held in in Cape town South Africa in February 2023.
