The Department of Medical Microbiology was formed from the Department of Pathology and Microbiology in 1980. Its research component is largely orientated towards sexually transmitted diseases and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection, but in addition covers a wide variety of other diseases such as diarrhoeal diseases, pulmonary tuberculosis, malaria, toxoplasmosis, domestic water microbiology, and soil transmitted helminths, among others, through its postgraduate students’ research. The University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID), and Kenya AIDS Vaccine Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), were developed from the Department of Medical Microbiology.
