KAVI-ICR Hosts Prestigious DFG Grant Principal Investigators Retreat in Nairobi

Prof. Madeleine Bunders Delivering her lecture on Modulation of Immune Development by HIV Exposure in Children

On May 30, 2025, KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) was honored to host the Principal Investigators (PIs) of the DFG-funded research consortium for a high-level retreat at the University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Health Sciences. The retreat brought together leading scientists from Kenya, Germany, South Africa, Cameroon and Zimbabwe to review project milestones, share scientific progress, and jointly plan the upcoming renewal application.

The day began with welcome remarks by Dr. Marianne Mureithi, Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and Director at KAVI-ICR, followed by a compelling overview of grant progress by Prof. Marcus Altfeld. Project updates were presented by each PI, highlighting achievements and innovations in mucosal immunology, sex-based immune responses, and translational virology research.

The retreat served as a platform to deepen collaborations, refine strategic priorities, and lay the groundwork for the next phase of the DFG consortium’s impactful work in global immunology. KAVI-ICR was proud to host this dynamic scientific exchange and reaffirm its commitment to international research excellence.

The event concluded with a networking dinner celebrating the shared vision and collaborative spirit that continues to drive cutting-edge biomedical research across continents.
