Celebrating Women in Science: Inspiring the Next Generation

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we honor the women who are breaking barriers and shaping the future of STEM. One such trailblazer is Dr. Marianne Mureithi, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nairobi and Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology. More than a scientist, she is a mentor and advocate, dedicated to fostering the next generation of female scientists in Africa.

Dr. Mureithi’s passion for science began at a young age, driven by an innate curiosity about the human body and diseases. Growing up, she witnessed firsthand how illnesses could profoundly impact individuals, families, and entire communities. This personal experience ignited her desire to be part of the solution—to understand diseases at a deeper level and work toward prevention and treatment.

However, her journey in science was not just fueled by curiosity but also by a commitment to equity in healthcare. Recognizing the limited access to cutting-edge treatments in many African communities, Dr. Mureithi set out to ensure that scientific advancements are not just theoretical but accessible and impactful. She believes that solutions must be rooted in science, innovation, and equity.

A significant influence in her career was mentorship. She was fortunate to have mentors who encouraged and challenged her, reinforcing her belief that she belonged in science—even in traditionally male-dominated spaces. Now, as a researcher and educator, she is committed to lifting others, particularly young women. Through her role at the University of Nairobi, she actively mentors aspiring scientists, ensuring they have the support and guidance to thrive in their careers.

For Dr. Mureithi, science is more than just a profession—it is a calling. It is about impact, breaking boundaries, and ensuring that the next generation of African scientists plays a vital role in shaping global health and medicine. Her work exemplifies the power of representation and the importance of providing young women with role models who demonstrate that they, too, can be scientists, innovators, and leaders in their fields.

As we celebrate this day, we recognize the contributions of women like Dr. Mureithi, who are paving the way for future generations. Their dedication and resilience inspire a new wave of female scientists who will continue to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.
