Department Doctoral Student Featured on The Lancet

Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology Doctoral Student Dr. Athman Mwatondo's work was recently published in the prestigious journal The Lancet. Dr. Mwatondo is a Medical Epidemiologist working for the Ministry of Health in Kenya. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Nairobi and MSc in Applied Epidemiology from Jomo Kenyatta University.

In addition to his doctoral studies, he is currently co-heading the Zoonotic Disease Unit, Kenya’s One Health Platform, Athman is involved in initiatives bringing together animal and human health professions to address zoonotic diseases and other One Health drivers. These include development of key documents towards prevention and control of priority zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance and food safety, participating in collaborative research on the animal-human-environment interface as well as conduct zoonotic disease surveillance and outbreak investigations.

The published paper, A global analysis of One Health Networks and the proliferation of One Health collaborations, is part of the World Health Organization's approach to form an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. The approach recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.
