The University of Nairobi is excited to announce the opportunity for two of our doctoral researchers to participate in the prestigious Una Europa One Health Summer School hosted by the University of Helsinki, Finland. This interdisciplinary program is designed to enhance understanding and application of the One Health concept, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental Health.

Why Attend?

A new publication by members of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and their collaborators was recently published focusing on the Biphasic MERS-CoV Incidence in Nomadic Dromedaries with Putative Transmission to Humans, Kenya, 2022–2023.

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, under the esteemed leadership of Chair Dr. Marianne Mureithi, in collaboration with the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, proudly hosted the Early Career Champions (ECC) programme from January 29th to February 2nd. This innovative initiative marks a significant milestone in the journey towards integrating One Health principles into the fabric of global health research and policy.

Chancellor Patrick Verkooijen of the University of Nairobi embarked on his inaugural visit to the the Faculty of Health Sciences. During his time there, he engaged with faculty staff and students.  

Athman Mwatondo, a PhD scholar from the University of Nairobi's Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, has led a critical study on brucellosis, a neglected zoonotic disease impacting humans and livestock. This research, part of his ongoing doctoral research, was supervised by mentors Dr. Marianne Mureithi and Dr.

Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology Doctoral Student Dr. Athman Mwatondo's work was recently published in the prestigious journal The Lancet. Dr. Mwatondo is a Medical Epidemiologist working for the Ministry of Health in Kenya. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Nairobi and MSc in Applied Epidemiology from Jomo Kenyatta University.
