KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) was awarded the 2022 International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) External Quality Assessment (EQA) Awards For Tier 1 and Tier 2. This is the second year running that the Institute has won this prestigious award. It recognises the best performing laboratories amongst their Clinical Research Centres in Africa. The Institute at the University of Nairobi, KNH Campus was first among Tier 1 and the Kangemi site among Tier 2.
IAVI was represented by Mr. Bashir Farah and Ms. Nancy Kisangau, who presented the awards to KAVI-ICR Director and Professor of Medical Microbiology & Tropical Medicine at the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Professor Walter Jaoko and the Laboratory Manager Irene Ann Mwangi. Also present at the awards ceremony were various KAVI-ICR staff including Senior Scientist Professor of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Omu Anzala.
Discussing the Institute winning the awards two years running Prof. Jaoko said, “Achieving the EQA Awards two years running highlights our continuous rise in clinical research of the highest standards. Our Institute’s vision is to be of excellence in health research, innovation and knowledge translation and through our work we strive to have a direct impact on healthcare with the region.”
Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology as well as Scientific Team Lead at KAVI-ICR Dr. Marianne Mureithi stated, "The back-to-back IAVI EQA Awards serve as a testament to the groundbreaking and innovative research conducted in our Institute. These accolades celebrate not just the brilliance of the entire team led by our Departments Professors Prof. Walter Jaoko and Prof. Omu Anzala, but also the pioneering spirit driving our research endeavours to challenge and transform the face of global health."
