Introduction

The Department of Medical Microbiology, located in the Faculty of Health Sciences is a leader in research on infectious diseases and the mother of two institutes; Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative - Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) and University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID).  The department serves the School of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dental Sciences. Besides teaching undergraduate students of these schools, the department teaches medical microbiology to postgraduate students from departments of Pathology, Surgery and UNITID.

Here at last! First coronavirus case reported in Kenya

It is not surprising that Kenya has reported the first COVID-19 case, it was coming. With more than half of the countries affected so far, it very likely that COVID-19 will spread to nearly all countries before the outbreak dies off. The number of cases is likely to reach 150,000 in a day or two and over 5000 deaths have been reported so far.

Musyoki emerges best in poster presentation at researchers’ symposium

Moses Musyoki joined the University of Nairobi’s Department of Medical Microbiology in 2015 and has since advanced his academic and professional career, earning a Master of Science degree in Medical Microbiology from the same university. 

Through mentorship, he has developed a strong interest in research, with a particular focus on infectious diseases, contributing to efforts to understand emerging infectious disease threats and advance evidence-based prevention, diagnosis, and management approaches.
