The Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Nairobi, together with the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), today hosted Dr. Najib Isse Dirie from SIMAD University, Somalia.

Dr. Dirie paid a courtesy call to the Chair of the Department and Director of KAVI-ICR, Dr. Marianne Mureithi, accompanied by department lecturer Dr. Hellen Mwaura. The visit focused on exploring avenues for joint collaboration between the two institutions. Discussions covered potential research projects, academic exchange opportunities, and a framework for strengthening institutional partnerships.

As part of the visit, Dr. Dirie toured the Department’s teaching and research facilities, engaged with staff, and received a briefing on ongoing projects at both the Department and KAVI-ICR.

This engagement follows a recent three-day curriculum review workshop hosted by the Department, which examined strategies to integrate One Health principles into the Master’s programme reflecting the Department’s commitment to addressing health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Marianne Mureithi emphasized the value of regional collaboration, stating:

"For East African nations, the One Health approach is not just an academic concept, it is a shared responsibility. By working together across borders, we can build stronger research networks, respond faster to emerging health threats, and create sustainable solutions for our communities."

The Department looks forward to deepening its partnership with SIMAD University and advancing collaborative initiatives that will have lasting regional impact.
