The seven-day 2022 Nairobi International Trade Fair (NITF) which begun in earnest on September 26, 2022, provided a platform for the University of Nairobi to showcase its innovative and transformative technologies in offering quality and world class education, in line with NITF’s theme “Promoting innovation and technology in Agriculture and Trade.
The Chair of Council, Prof. Miriam Were, The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kiama and the COO, Mr. Brian Ouma received the Trophy for the Best University stand awarded to the University by the Deputy President of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua today at the Nairobi ASK Show. The University of Nairobi through partnership with Silk Origin Limited (www.silkoriginltd.com) has commenced sericulture and moriculture research with the goal of introducing this smallholder farmers across the country and is leveraging on the advantage of Kenya’s geographic location and weather, which are conducive for all year round mulberry and silkworm production in large quantities.
This collaboration between UoN and Silk Origin Limited has gone beyond textile production and through the department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology commenced research in the potential use of the silk byproducts in the Medical Biotechnology field. The department has successfully extracted Fibroin and sericin byproducts of the Silk Fiber from silkworms Bombyx mori. And intends to advance this cutting-edge technology by making scaffolds, wound sutures, hydrogels, powders, and nanoparticles out of silk fibroin and sericin to aid wound healing and tissue engineering in bone, cartilage, tendon, and ligament tissues.
