Celebrating the Success of the ECC Programme: A Leap Forward in One Health

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, under the esteemed leadership of Chair Dr. Marianne Mureithi, in collaboration with the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, proudly hosted the Early Career Champions (ECC) programme from January 29th to February 2nd. This innovative initiative marks a significant milestone in the journey towards integrating One Health principles into the fabric of global health research and policy.

Grand Challenges Annual Meeting in Senegal

In the vibrant city of Dakar, Senegal, October marked a significant convergence of minds committed to tackling the world's health challenges. Among the esteemed attendees of the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting (GCAM) 2023 October 9-13th, 2023,  were key members from the University of Nairobi's Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology: Dr. Marianne Mureithi, Prof. Omu Anzala, and Dr. Daniel Muema.

University of Washington Kenya Research & Training Centre 2023-2028 Strategic Planning

The Kenya Research and Training Center (KRTC) held a strategic plan launch meeting on January 24, 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. It was Led by Prof. Carey Farquhar, the Interim Chair and Professor, Department of Global Health and Director International AIDS Research and Training Program and Kenya Research and Training Center.  Dr. Marianne Mureithi, Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology was also in attendance.

AFrIBOP 2022 Course

PhD Scholar Matrona Akiso recently attended the (AfrIBOP) Course in Malawi. This was a one week course on African Immunology of Parasites, Pathogens, and Pathogenesis (AfrIBOP) followed by another week of flow cytometry/bioinformatics training. The immunology course entailed talks and immunology lectures from well-known researchers from University of Glasgow, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme, KEMRI Wellcome Trust and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Courtesy Visit to the KEMRI-Thika site

The Chair of the Department, Dr. Marianne Mureithi, paid a courtesy call to the KEMRI-Thika Partners in Health and Research Development (PHRD) research site in Thika town. She was accompanied by Ms. Magdaline Burugu and David Mwoshi from the Department. The Medical Microbiology & Immunology team discussed various areas of common interest and possible avenues of collaboration and partnership. 

Gilead Sciences Executive Meeting

The Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and the Director of the KAVI-ICR hosted a round table discussion with Gilead Sciences, led by Christopher Whitfield, General Manager of Gilead Sciences, and Dr. Summer Sitima, General Manager of Gilead Sciences in Central and East Africa, to discuss the possibility of a partnership and collaboration. They were joined by AMSUN representatives who represented medical students and the RADA UNESCO-UoN team led by Lisbeth Kageni.
