On Thursday, 29th June 2023, we had the unique opportunity to attend an enlightening talk by Prof. Omu Anzala from the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. This exceptional dialogue emphasized the discovery and implications of a robust immune response against SARS-CoV-2 in the adult Kenyan population.
Introduction
A recent publication in the "BMJ Open Respiratory Research", penned by Lilian Nkirote Njagi, Videlis Nduba, Marianne Wanjiru Mureithi, and Jared Ongechi Mecha, offers valuable insights into the complex relationship between HIV and tuberculosis (TB) infection. Dr. Lilian Najgi is a PhD Scholar in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology.
The Scope of the Problem
Nairobi, Kenya, May 29th, 2023 - The KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research had the honor of hosting a team from the International Vaccine Institute (IVI). The team from IVI paid a courtesy visit to the Institute to establish potential research project collaborations.
The BioMed Central, an open access journal and part of Springer Nature, released a special issue on Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) on the 15th of May which included two papers with data from Kenya.

James Kang'ethe, a PhD scholar in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Nairobi, recently attended the African Advanced Vaccinology Course (Afro-ADVAC) held in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, South Africa. James, a CARTA cohort 10 fellow, participated in the course between April 17 - 26, 2023.
The Leave No Medic Behind Initiative Charity Run (LNMB), organized by the Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN), serves as an essential fundraising project to support the financial needs of underprivileged students in the School of Medicine.
The African Caribbean Cancer Consortium (AC3) won the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Team Science Award at the AACR Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.
As stated by the AACR, "This award recognizes an outstanding interdisciplinary research team for its innovative and meritorious science that has advanced or likely will advance our fundamental knowledge of cancer, or a team that has applied existing knowledge to advance the detection, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of cancer."
