The Department Shines at PC and Staff Recognition Award Ceremony

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology shone brightly at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Performance Contracting and Staff Recognition Awards FY 2021/2022 ceremony, making it a momentous occasion. The event, which took place at the Chandaria Center for Performing Arts on December 5, 2022, was presided over by the University Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Stephen Kiama and Prof. Miriam Were, Chair of Council.

Dr. Marianne Mureithi Graduates from IAVI’s First Cohort of ADVANCE Leadership Development Programme

Marianne Mureithi, Ph.D., the Chair, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Nairobi, has graduated from the inaugural cohort of the IAVI ADVANCE Leadership Development Programme (LDP). LDP is an initiative to develop a critical mass of promising scientific leaders uniquely equipped to advance the field for next-generation AIDS vaccine development in Africa and India.

AFrIBOP 2022 Course

PhD Scholar Matrona Akiso recently attended the (AfrIBOP) Course in Malawi. This was a one week course on African Immunology of Parasites, Pathogens, and Pathogenesis (AfrIBOP) followed by another week of flow cytometry/bioinformatics training. The immunology course entailed talks and immunology lectures from well-known researchers from University of Glasgow, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme, KEMRI Wellcome Trust and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Visit by Professor Carey Farquhar

Carey Farquhar, a Professor in the Departments of Global Health, Medicine, and Epidemiology and Vice Dean for Education in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, paid a visit to the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology. She actively conducts research in Kenya on HIV testing and partner notification services, HIV and HCV diagnosis and access to treatment among people who inject drugs, and non-communicable diseases among HIV-positive individuals.

Successful Doctoral Defenses

Throughout the past month, the department has celebrated the successful PhD Vivas of multiple doctoral candidates. This includes:

1. Dr. Isaac Kisaka, whose research topic was Preclinical Care, Clinical Management, and Outcomes of Dog Bite Injuries in High Rabies Burden Districts of Wakiso and Kampala, Uganda.

2. Dr. Moses Masika: His research focus was Emerging and Re-Emerging Arboviral Infections in Two Kenyan Counties.

University of Nairobi & University of Helsinki Early Career Champions Programme One Health Workshop

The University of Nairobi & University of Helsinki Early Career Champions Programme One Health Workshop (Nov 28th Nov - 2nd Dec 2022) kicked off today with a welcome address from The Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Osanjo and Chair of Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Dr.

World AIDS Day 2022

The University of Nairobi through the Directorate of University Health Services will host the commemoration of World AIDS Day on Thursday, 1st December, 2022 from 8:00 am. 

 

The Global  theme for this year's #WAD2022 is #Equalize while the National theme for the day 'Stop HIV Infections, adolescent pregnancies, sexual and gender based Violence' #Endtriplethreat

 

National Granular Mapping on Soil Transmitted Helmithes, Schistosomiasis and Tungiasis

The Chief Technologist of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology Felistas Muthini is assisting the Ministry of Health in the National Granular mapping on soil transmitted Helmithes, Schistosomiasis and Tungiasis across the country.

Professor Pier Piccaluga Visit

Professor Pier Piccaluga paid a courtesy visit to Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology Dr. Marianne Mureithi.

Prof. Piccaluga is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine, Bologna University School of Medicine—Institute of Hematology and Medical Oncology, and the Biobank of research at the IRCCS S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital.
