Courtesy Visit to the KEMRI-Thika site

The Chair of the Department, Dr. Marianne Mureithi, paid a courtesy call to the KEMRI-Thika Partners in Health and Research Development (PHRD) research site in Thika town. She was accompanied by Ms. Magdaline Burugu and David Mwoshi from the Department. The Medical Microbiology & Immunology team discussed various areas of common interest and possible avenues of collaboration and partnership. 

Head of the Zoonotic Disease Unit of the Ministry of Health Visits the Department

Dr Athman Mwatondo, a medical epidemiologist with Kenya’s Ministry of Health and the co-lead in the Zoonotic Disease Unit for Kenya’s One Health Platform,  Zoonotic Disease Unit (ZDU) at the Ministry of Health (MoH) Kenya paid a courtesy visit to the Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology Dr Marianne Mureithi. Dr Mwatondo is currently doing his Doctoral studies in the same department at the University of Nairobi

Department's Scientists Featured in USAID Article For Their Work in HIV Research

Members of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research Dr. Robert Robert Langat and PhD student Matrona Akiso were recently featured in an article by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as some of the scientists at the forefront of developing a HIV Vaccine.

Female Genital Schistosomiasis and HIV Infection Field Work

Dr. Kariuki Njaanake, lead a team of researchers in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology in sample and specimen collection in Kilifi County for the ongoing research on “Female Genital Schistosomiasis and HIV infection. Hellen Kariuki and Felistas Muthini, Doctoral researchers and faculty members joined in this exercise.

22nd International Pathogenic Neisseria Conference

Dr. Anne Maina, Lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology recently attended the  22nd International Pathogenic Neisseria Conference (IPNC 2022) in Cape Town, South Africa from the 9th to 14th October 2022.

Dr. Maina presented her ongoing research titled 'Symptomatic approach to Neisseria gonorrhoeae management performs better in men than women: a cross-sectional study in Nairobi, Kenya. 

Gilead Sciences Executive Meeting

The Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and the Director of the KAVI-ICR hosted a round table discussion with Gilead Sciences, led by Christopher Whitfield, General Manager of Gilead Sciences, and Dr. Summer Sitima, General Manager of Gilead Sciences in Central and East Africa, to discuss the possibility of a partnership and collaboration. They were joined by AMSUN representatives who represented medical students and the RADA UNESCO-UoN team led by Lisbeth Kageni.
